Report: Yankees eyeing D-Backs' Marte to help injury-riddled OF
The New York Yankees are looking for some additional outfield help in the wake of more injuries.
New York has been in contact with the Arizona Diamondbacks about outfielder Starling Marte, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Arizona is reportedly open to trading Marte after the club's prolonged August slide all but ended its playoff hopes.
Marte could help the Yankees down the stretch simply by being a healthy outfielder. Injuries have once again hit the Bronx Bombers hard, particularly in the outfield, where they're without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton due to calf and hamstring strains, respectively. Both sluggers could be sidelined until well into September.
The Yankees got another scare on Sunday when center fielder Aaron Hicks left the second game of their doubleheader against the Mets. It was later announced Hicks was pulled due to cramping in both calves.
Money may also be an issue for the Yankees as they look to add ahead of Monday's deadline. The team doesn't want to add too much payroll during the pandemic-shortened season, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Marte has been one of the D-Backs' most reliable hitters this year, slashing .311/.384/.443 with two homers, 11 extra-base hits, 14 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 33 games. The 31-year-old is owed approximately $1.75 million over the balance of 2020, and his $12.5-million club option in 2021 can be bought out for $1 million.
