Phillies win 9 of 10 to make Bryce Harper's prophecy come true
It appears like Bryce Harper can predict the future.
After the Philadelphia Phillies lost five straight and fell into last place on Aug. 22, the star outfielder said his team needed to win nine out of the next 10 games if they hoped to salvage the season.
On Thursday, the Phillies did exactly that with a 6-5 victory over the Washington Nationals.
"I heard someone say that Bryce is a prophet," manager Joe Girardi said, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. "I'm going to go to him to see what we need to do next."
Since Harper's statement, the Phillies have took two series from the Nationals and one from the Atlanta Braves. The wins over the division rivals skyrocketed the Phillies up the NL East division standings, where they sit 2 1/2 games back of the Braves for first place. If the season ended today, Philadelphia would also be in the playoffs.
Philadelphia now has four games against the Mets in New York, and Harper believes the Phillies' success will continue.
"As a team, I think we've gone out there and played to the best of our ability - and we can still get better," Harper said. "That's the thing about this team that I love; we can go out there and play this game, win ballgames and win nine out of 10. We've got a four-game set against the Mets; they're a good team, but I think we can go in there and do the same thing."
