Report: Mets' Lowrie won't play this season
Jed Lowrie's frustrating New York Mets tenure is all but officially over.
The veteran infielder, who's appeared in just nine games since joining the Mets two years ago and will become a free agent this winter, won't play this season while continuing to deal with left knee issues, sources told Newsday's Tim Healey.
Lowrie hasn't been with the Mets since the campaign started. He's currently at home in Houston and is unable to participate in baseball activities after receiving platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections in his troublesome knee, a source told Healey.
"I have no idea right now what his progression is," manager Luis Rojas said Wednesday when asked about Lowrie's health.
The Mets gave Lowrie a two-year, $20-million deal after he produced career-best numbers during an All-Star campaign with the Oakland Athletics in 2018. But he was struck by injuries almost immediately and only debuted with the team last September.
Lowrie made just eight plate appearances in a Mets uniform, recording zero hits with no RBIs, four strikeouts, and a walk. The 36-year-old never took the field defensively as a Met, making all of his appearances for New York as a pinch hitter.
Though he's set to become a free agent after the season, the Mets' commitment to Lowrie isn't completely fulfilled. The team still owes him $2.5 million as part of his $5-million signing bonus. That payment is due Jan. 15, according to Cot's Baseball Contracts.
