Braun: Returning in 2021 depends on if it's 'something I want to do'
Ryan Braun is in the final guaranteed year of his contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, and he reflected on his career and what could be next during possibly his last game at Miller Park.
The six-time All-Star spoke candidly about his future on Sunday.
"When the season is over, I'll take some time to reflect on where we're at, talk to my family about it, see where I'm at physically, see what the world looks like, and just take a lot of things into account before I make that decision," Braun said regarding playing in 2021 during an interview on the Fox Sports Wisconsin broadcast. "I feel like physically, certainly I'd be capable of playing longer. Just a matter of whether it's something I want to do or not."
Braun, who's been a Brewer for his entire 14-year career, has a $15-million mutual option for 2021 that Milwaukee is unlikely to pick up, meaning the outfielder could hit free agency heading into his age-37 season.
"It's a bit of an emotional day," Braun said. "I think it would be a lot different if there were fans here. The whole experience this year feels drastically different than any normal or regular baseball season would, obviously, for so many reasons.
"But certainly there's so many incredible moments and memories that I've had an opportunity to be a part of here in this ballpark, so, I definitely want to take it in a little bit, just enjoy it, and reflect a little bit today."
Braun, who was named the 2011 NL MVP after leading the Senior Circuit in slugging and OPS, will be coming off of a five-year, $105-million contract this winter. The five-time Silver Slugger continues to produce, authoring a .255/.306/.549 slash line with seven homers and one stolen base over 31 games this year.
