Report: Springer giving 'serious thought' to playing for Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in George Springer, and it appears the feeling is mutual.
Springer has given a lot of "serious thought" to playing for the Blue Jays, a source told MLB Network's Jon Morosi.
The former Houston Astros outfielder is also considering the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox. Both teams are close to where Springer grew up in Connecticut, Morosi adds.
Reports of Toronto's interest in Springer first surfaced in early November, with the Blue Jays pinpointing center field as a position they'd like to upgrade. The team's front office has reportedly identified Jackie Bradley Jr. as another target.
Springer is one of the top free agents available this offseason. The three-time All-Star produced a .270/.361/.491 slash line with 174 home runs and 458 RBIs over seven campaigns in Houston.
The 31-year-old has also been a dynamic postseason performer, hitting 19 homers and recording 38 RBIs in 63 career playoff games. He was named World Series MVP in 2017 when the Astros secured the organization's first title.
Toronto's outfield currently consists of Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and one of them would need to be relegated to the bench or possibly traded to make room for Springer's potential addition.
