Red Sox ink Hunter Renfroe to 1-year contract
The Boston Red Sox have signed outfielder Hunter Renfroe to a one-year contract.
He will earn a base salary of $3.1 million with bonuses that could max out the deal at $3.7 million, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
Renfroe, 28, recently became a free agent after being non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays.
A prolific power hitter, Renfroe hit between 26-33 home runs for three straight seasons from 2017-19 with the San Diego Padres. However, he struggled to find consistency at the plate in 2020 after being dealt to the Rays last December in the trade that sent Tommy Pham and Jake Cronenworth to San Diego. He hit .156/.252/.393 with eight home runs in 42 games.
The Red Sox had been looking to add an outfielder this offseason with Jackie Bradley Jr. hitting free agency, though a reunion with him wasn't ruled out.
Renfroe could slot in at right field with Alex Verdugo in center and Andrew Benintendi patrolling left.
