Report: White Sox to sign top international prospect Yoelqui Cespedes
The Chicago White Sox are expected to sign Yoelqui Cespedes to a bonus for around $2 million, sources told MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez.
Cespedes is the younger half-brother of Yoenis Cespedes and the No. 1-ranked international prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
The 23-year-old outfielder was declared a free agent and deemed eligible to sign with a major-league team last March. He likely won't ink his deal until Jan. 15, 2021, when the international signing period begins, Sanchez adds.
Cespedes is considered a player with five-tool potential, and he's beginning to show similar power potential to his older brother after recently putting on 15 pounds of muscle.
The Cuban defected from the national team in June 2019 while playing at a tournament in New York.
Chicago's ties to Cuban players run deep, as four members of the club's projected 2021 starting lineup (Jose Abreu, Yasmani Grandal, Yoan Moncada, and Luis Robert) are from Cuba.
