Report: Red Sox, Marwin Gonzalez agree to 1-year deal
The Boston Red Sox and utility infielder Marwin Gonzalez have agreed to a one-year, $3-million deal, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The Toronto Blue Jays were also in on Gonzalez before his agreement with Boston, Feinsand notes.
After seven years with the Houston Astros, Gonzalez spent the last two seasons with the Minnesota Twins and hit .211 with five home runs in 2020.
The 31-year-old's career season came in Houston when he slashed .303/.377/.530 with 23 home runs and 90 RBIs in 134 games. That was also the same season the Astros were discovered to have used a sign-stealing scheme to cheat at the plate.
Gonzalez also reunites with Red Sox skipper Alex Cora, who served as Houston's bench coach during the infielder's tenure with the Astros.
Positional versatility appears to be the name of the game this offseason for Boston as the team has now added Gonzalez and Enrique Hernandez. Gonzalez has played every position other than pitcher, catcher, and center fielder over the last two seasons.
