The Chicago Cubs signed catcher Tony Wolters to a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.
Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The Pittsburgh Pirates granted Wolters a release from his minor-league deal in late March.
Wolters, 28, spent the last five seasons as a member of the Colorado Rockies. He owns a career .238/.323/.319 line with seven home runs and 123 RBIs in 391 games.
The left-hitting Wolters will serve as a backup catcher to Willson Contreras.
Chicago designated reliever James Norwood for assignment in a corresponding move.
