Tatis lands on IL, shoulder injury deemed 'non-surgical'
The San Diego Padres placed shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation and recalled outfielder Brian O'Grady, the team announced.
The injury is being called a slight labrum tear by general manager AJ Preller, who adds it is "non-surgical" and that he's optimistic Tatis could return after a minimum 10-day stint, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. The move to have Tatis sit out for 10 days was also described as "just being safe."
Preller also added Tatis wanted to be in the lineup for Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants, according to Gonzalez. The imaging done on Tatis' shoulder was seen as "pretty positive."
Tatis left Monday's game against the Giants after striking out on a swing that visibly hurt the shortstop. He was helped off the field by a trainer and manager Jayce Tingler.
Tatis was hampered by left shoulder discomfort late in spring training but was back with the team after two days and cleared for the Opening Day roster.
For his career, the 22-year-old Silver Slugger has hit .298/.372/.577 with 40 homers and 27 steals over 147 games.
