Yankees' Boone denied crucial replay in loss to Orioles after time expires

The New York Yankees lost again on Monday, this time to the lowly division-rival Baltimore Orioles, and a critical unreviewed play could be partially to blame.

In the eighth inning with the Yankees trailing by two runs, Aaron Judge was ruled out while advancing to third base prior to DJ LeMahieu crossing home plate. Consequently, LeMahieu's run was removed from the board and the score remained 4-2, instead of the contest being a one-run game heading into the final inning.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone eventually came out to ask for a review, but the time to do so had expired while the team was checking if the play was worth reviewing.

Boone then stormed onto the field, and first-base umpire Greg Gibson promptly ejected him.

"Greg Gibson just came down from first base and then apparently said we didn't have any time left when I went to challenge, and so they didn't let us challenge anything," Boone said postgame.

"It was too quick," the Yankees manager continued, according to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. "And it was ... I just felt like it was kind of bullying, frankly."

Boone added that the club considered reviewing the play immediately, but he wanted to give coaching assistant Brett Webber and bench coach Carlos Mendoza time to look at both plays involved.

The Yankees skipper also said he doesn't think the run would have counted had the club been permitted to request a review.

The time allotted for a manager to ask for a replay review was reduced to 20 seconds prior to the 2020 season, down from 30 seconds in previous campaigns.

With the loss, the Yankees dropped to 9-13, and they now hold sole possession of last place in the AL East. They also own the worst run differential in the division at minus-10.
