In a corresponding move, the team recalled reliever Jeremy Beasley.
Matz, 30, has authored a 4.26 ERA and 3.80 FIP over 13 starts during his first season with the club after being acquired this past winter from the New York Mets.
With a negative test, Matz will be eligible for reinstatement potentially in time for his next start.
Beasley, 25, had just been jettisoned to the minors as the Jays shuffled their bullpen. The right-hander has a 6.75 ERA and 6.75 FIP in five appearances at the big-league level this year.
