Red Sox select prep star Marcelo Mayer No. 4 overall
With the fourth pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Marcelo Mayer, a shortstop from Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California.
Mayer was thought to be a candidate to go first overall before dropping to the Red Sox at No. 4.
The 18-year-old star set himself apart from the rest of the prep class with a strong showing on the summer showcase circuit. Though COVID-19 shortened his junior season, he maintained his momentum through his senior year, hitting 14 homers over 34 games and posting a 1.442 OPS.
