The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-hander Luis Garcia to a major-league deal, the team announced Friday.
St. Louis optioned righty Johan Oviedo to the minors and transferred Carlos Martinez to the 60-day injured list in corresponding moves.
Garcia, 34, last pitched in the majors with the Texas Rangers in 2020, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and nine walks over 8 1/3 innings. The eight-year veteran owns a career 4.26 ERA and 4.32 FIP over 326 games, including four starts.
The 43-45 Cardinals sit tied for third in the NL Central with the Chicago Cubs. St. Louis is currently without key arms in the rotation and bullpen, including Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas, and Jordan Hicks, among others.
