Report: Phillies, Astros, Yankees among teams eyeing Marlins' Marte
The Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees are among clubs checking in on the availability of Miami Marlins outfielder Starling Marte, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Miami had been working on a contract extension with Marte, but those talks were never close and have ended, SportsGrid's Craig Mish reports.
Marte is slated to hit free agency after this season.
The Astros have gotten excellent production from their outfielders this season, ranking tied for second in the majors with a 116 wRC+ thanks in large part to Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker, and Myles Straw. Slugger Yordan Alvarez can also play the outfield but has primarily been used as a designated hitter.
The Phillies have 30 home runs between outfielders Bryce Harper and Andrew McCutchen, with the speedy Travis Jankowski currently patrolling center.
Yankees outfielders have largely struggled offensively aside from Aaron Judge, and he's currently on the injured list after testing positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, recent acquisition Tim Locastro tore his ACL on Saturday and Trey Amburgey left Sunday's game with a hamstring injury.
A trade would mark the third for Marte since the beginning of 2020. The Pittsburgh Pirates sent the 32-year-old to the Arizona Diamondbacks in January 2020 only for the D-Backs to flip him to Miami at last year's trade deadline.
