Mets place Baez on IL with back spasms
The New York Mets placed infielder Javier Baez on the 10-day injured list with back spasms, it was announced Friday.
His IL stint is retroactive to Aug. 12. A timetable for Baez's return was not immediately given. Infielder Travis Blankenhorn was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding roster move.
Baez was pulled from the Mets' game on Aug. 8 with what was initially called left hip tightness. Although the team first expressed hope that his injury wasn't too serious, he's made just one pinch-hit appearance since then.
The 28-year-old joined the Mets in a deadline-day trade with the Chicago Cubs. In 10 games with his new club, he's hitting .171/.216/.343 with two homers, three RBIs, and 14 strikeouts.
Baez is one of 16 Mets players currently on the IL, a list that also includes ace Jacob deGrom and star shortstop Francisco Lindor.
