The San Diego Padres signed free-agent right-hander Jake Arrieta to a minor-league contract, the team announced Monday.
Arrieta was released by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 12 after he posted a 5-11 record with a 6.88 ERA in 20 starts.
The 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner owns a 115-90 mark with a 3.93 ERA and 3.98 FIP during 1,600 career innings (275 starts) for the Baltimore Orioles, Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies.
The Padres were on the hunt for starting pitching after placing Yu Darvish on the injured list Sunday.
Darvish joined Padres starters Mike Clevinger, Dinelson Lamet, Chris Paddack, and Adrian Morejon on the IL.
San Diego enters Monday leading the Cincinnati Reds by 2 1/2 games for the NL's second wild-card spot.
