Cora: Red Sox 'embarrassing' effort vs. Rangers not acceptable
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora was not pleased with his team after a 10-1 loss to the last-place Texas Rangers on Saturday.
"Embarrassing is the word," Cora said, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne. "It starts from me. Five errors. We didn't run the bases well, we didn't put good at-bats (together), we didn't pitch. I think in this thing, it's a team effort. It starts with us, with the coaches, to keep coaching, and we've been playing sloppy ball for a while. They keep doing it. At one point, we've got to be accountable too."
Boston's five errors were a season high, bringing its total for the campaign to 84 - the second most in the majors.
The sloppy play has been front and center during the Red Sox's poor second half. Boston is 15-19 since the conclusion of the All-Star break, with the club committing 18 errors through that stretch of games.
They've fallen 6 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East and would not make the playoffs if the season ended today.
"It's not acceptable. For a team that is fighting for the playoffs, to show up like that and play like that, it doesn't matter if you win or lose a game," Cora explained. "It's how you win or lose the game. That's not acceptable. We played a good baseball game yesterday, and today was awful. That was a bad game."
