Report: Mets agree to 2-year, $20M deal with Eduardo Escobar

The New York Mets agreed to a two-year, $20-million contract with switch-hitting infielder Eduardo Escobar, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

The deal - which is pending a physical - contains a club option for 2024, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The 32-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2021, hitting .253/.314/.472 with 28 homers and 90 RBIs across 146 total games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers. He owns a lifetime .745 OPS across 11 major-league seasons with four teams.

In Flushing, Escobar will provide the Mets with some additional infield depth and versatility. A natural third baseman, Escobar's spent time at all four infield positions during his 11-year career, adding first base to his repertoire last summer. He also adds more balance to a club swimming with left-handed bats.

The signing won't stop New York from trying to retain infielder Javier Baez, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The team is reportedly still in contact with Baez, who's apparently now in contract talks with the Detroit Tigers.
