The New York Yankees showed interest in free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa before baseball's work stoppage, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The likelihood of Correa signing with the Yankees remains unclear, according to Heyman. He notes that New York seemed more interested in Corey Seager, who went on to ink a deal with the Texas Rangers.

Correa is the top shortstop available in free agency and the Yankees have a clear need at the position, but there's a contentious history between the two parties.

The 27-year-old Correa not only helped eliminate the Bronx Bombers in both the 2017 and 2019 playoffs, but he also took a shot at Derek Jeter's defense this past November that did not sit well with Yankees fans.

Additionally, longtime Yankees ace CC Sabathia called Correa "a clown" last October for the shortstop's comments about criticism of the Houston Astros.

Correa is coming off a strong campaign with the Astros where he hit .279/.366/.485 with 26 home runs, 34 doubles, and 92 RBIs. He also led MLB with 20 defensive runs saved and has a history of performing well in the playoffs; his 59 postseason RBIs rank sixth all time.

Following the 2021 season, the Astros reportedly offered Correa a five-year deal, which he turned down. The Detroit Tigers also showed interest in him before agreeing to a contract with Javier Baez.
