Report: Rangers agree to 1-year deal with Garrett Richards
The Texas Rangers and veteran right-hander Garrett Richards have reportedly agreed to a deal, sources told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
It is reportedly a one-year contract with an option for 2023, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Richards, 33, spent the 2021 campaign with the Boston Red Sox and struggled as a starter before being sent to the bullpen down the stretch. He posted a 5.22 ERA over 22 starts and a 3.42 ERA in 26 1/3 innings as a reliever.
The former first-round pick spent the first eight years of his career with the division-rival Los Angeles Angels.
Richards has made the majority of his appearances out of the rotation, making 150 career starts while pitching 77 contests out of the bullpen. For his career, he owns a 3.81 ERA and 3.83 FIP.
The Rangers have had a transformative offseason, adding Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Kole Calhoun, Mitch Garver, and Brad Miller to the lineup.
They haven't done as much on the pitching side, but they did add Jon Gray to the rotation alongside veteran lefty Martin Perez. It's unclear whether Richards will serve as rotation depth alongside Dane Dunning and Taylor Hearn or if he will join the relief corps, which has only added Greg Holland thus far.
