Dodgers trade recently DFA'd Beaty to Padres
The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded first baseman/outfielder Matt Beaty to the division rival San Diego Padres in exchange for minor-league right-hander River Ryan, the teams announced Monday.
Beaty, 28, had recently been designated for assignment by the Dodgers to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for utility infielder Hanser Alberto.
The former 12th-round pick has played parts of the last three seasons with the Dodgers, hitting .262/.333/.425 with 18 homers and seven steals over 240 games. The lefty bat will likely fill an outfield role, potentially platooning with righty Wil Myers or switch-hitter Jurickson Profar, while Eric Hosmer assumes full-time first base duties in San Diego.
In order to make room on the roster for Beaty, the Padres placed left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz on the 60-day injured list.
Ryan, 23, has yet to make his professional debut after being selected in the 11th round of last year's draft. He made appearances as a hitter in the Padres' complex during the pandemic, going 12-for-39 with one homer and four steals.
