Mets trade Miguel Castro to Yankees for Joely Rodriguez
The New York Mets traded right-hander Miguel Castro to the New York Yankees in exchange for left-hander Joely Rodriguez, the team announced Sunday.
Castro gives the Yankees another late-inning bullpen option alongside Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Chad Green.
The 27-year-old appeared in 69 games for the Mets last season, authoring a 3.45 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in 70 1/3 innings.
Despite owning a career walk rate of 4.8 per nine, Castro has been extremely effective against right-handed hitters, limiting them to a .676 OPS throughout his time in the big leagues.
The Yankees will become the fifth organization of Castro's seven-year career. He will earn $2.6 million in 2022.
Rodriguez provides the Mets with another lefty option in a bullpen anchored by Edwin Diaz, Trevor May, and Adam Ottavino. Southpaws Chasen Shreve and Alex Claudio are also in Mets camp as non-roster invites.
The 30-year-old Rodriguez finished last season with the Yankees after they acquired him and Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers. He posted a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings for the Bronx Bombers.
Rodriguez is set to earn $2 million this season.
The deal is the second in two days by the Yankees, who acquired catcher Jose Trevino from the Rangers on Saturday.
It's also rare to see a move between the two New York clubs.
Before today, the Yankees and Mets hadn’t swapped major league players in a trade since 2004, when Mike Stanton and Felix Heredia changed boroughs; the Mets sold Gonzalez Germen to the Yankees in 2014.
