Reds' Stephenson suffers concussion in home-plate collision with Voit
Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson was forced to leave Tuesday's game following a nasty home-plate collision with the San Diego Padres' Luke Voit.
The Reds announced postgame that Stephenson sustained a concussion. He'll be placed on the seven-day concussion IL, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
In the bottom of the first inning, Voit tried to score from first base on Jurickson Profar's double. Reds shortstop Kyle Farmer's relay throw easily beat Voit to the plate, but the 6-foot-3, 255-pound designated hitter clipped Stephenson in the face with his elbow as he tried to slide past the catcher.
Stephenson remained on the ground while Reds trainers checked on him and eventually left the field.
Aramis Garcia, who had started as DH, took over for Stephenson behind the plate. Cincinnati lost the DH spot for the rest of the game, and starting pitcher Reiver Sanmartin had to bat for himself in the second inning.
The Reds have been decimated by injuries this season. They entered play Tuesday with 12 players on the injured list, including reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jonathan India.
Stephenson, 25, was enjoying a fine start to his 2022 campaign, owning a .845 OPS with two homers and six RBIs through 10 games.
