The Chicago Cubs acquired left-hander Sean Newcomb from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for veteran reliever Jesse Chavez and cash considerations, the team announced Wednesday.
Atlanta designated Newcomb, 28, for assignment Tuesday following his dismal start to the season. The former first-round pick put up a 7.20 ERA with four strikeouts and four walks in three relief appearances this month.
Over his six years with Atlanta, Newcomb posted a 4.25 ERA, 4.27 FIP, and 1.45 WHIP across 144 appearances (57 starts).
Chavez, meanwhile, will embark on his third stint with the Braves. He was an important piece of manager Brian Snitker's bullpen last year, putting up a 2.14 ERA and 2.01 FIP with 36 strikeouts and 11 walks over 33 2/3 innings in 2021. He didn't allow a run in seven postseason appearances.
The 38-year-old posted a 6.35 ERA in three games with the Cubs this month.
Originally drafted in 2002, Chavez owns a lifetime 4.45 ERA with 871 strikeouts across parts of 15 big-league seasons with nine teams.
