Gausman exits with ankle contusion after comebacker; X-rays negative

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman was removed from Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays after he was struck on the lower leg with a line drive off the bat of Wander Franco.

The ball left Franco's bat at 100 mph and appeared to hit Gausman around his right ankle.

Toronto announced that Gausman was dealing with a right ankle contusion. X-rays came back negative.

The Blue Jays turned to the recently recalled Casey Lawrence in relief in the first game of a doubleheader.

Gausman has excelled in his first season since signing a five-year contract with the Blue Jays. The 31-year-old entered Saturday's start with a 6-6 record, 2.93 ERA, and 10.15 K/9 across 86 innings.

Tampa Bay took the first game of the doubleheader 6-2. Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan continued his dominant season, racking up 10 strikeouts in seven innings and lowering his ERA to 1.74.
