Yankees place Severino on IL with low-grade lat strain
The New York Yankees placed right-hander Luis Severino on the 15-day injured list with a low-grade right lat strain, the club announced Thursday.
Severino suffered the injury during his abbreviated two-inning start against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. He pulled himself from the game with what the team initially called shoulder tightness and underwent an MRI on Thursday that confirmed the lat injury. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined.
Severino previously suffered a lat strain in 2019, limiting him to three starts that year.
The 28-year-old has been one of New York's best starters this season, posting a 3.45 ERA, 4.03 FIP, and 1.07 WHIP with 95 strikeouts across 86 innings.
The Yankees reinstated right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga from the IL in a corresponding roster move while also selecting righty Ryan Weber from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
