Blue Jays' Romano joins AL All-Star team as replacement

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano will represent the American League at the 2022 All-Star Game after being named as a replacement Sunday.

It's the 29-year-old's first career All-Star nod.

Romano and Chicago White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks were selected in place of New York Yankees and Houston Astros starters Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander.

In 34 appearances this season, Romano has registered 19 saves, tied for the best mark in the AL. The Canadian hurler has also posted a 2.73 ERA.

Romano is the Blue Jays' sixth All-Star, joining slugger Vlad Guerrero Jr., starter Alek Manoah, catcher Alejandro Kirk, and infielder Santiago Espinal. Outfielder George Springer was also selected to the Midsummer Classic but will not play due to an elbow issue.

With six representatives, Toronto is now tied with the Yankees and Atlanta Braves for the most this year.
