Tigers option struggling Torkelson to Triple-A
The Detroit Tigers optioned struggling infielder Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A Toledo, the club announced Sunday.
Torkelson, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft and made his MLB debut this season to much fanfare as the Tigers looked to take a step forward after a promising second half in 2021.
The young slugger failed to find his footing, however, slashing just .197/.282/.296 with five home runs, 25 runs scored, and 21 RBIs in 83 games.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Torkelson for reacting to the news in a professional manner, according to MLive Media Group's Evan Woodbery.
"We have a plan in place to get him some at-bats and get him back to being the offensive force that we know he's going to be, and it's easier and much less spotlight to do it at Triple-A than it is to continue to this in the big leagues," Hinch said, according to Woodbery.
