The St. Louis Cardinals have traded shortstop Edmundo Sosa to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-handed reliever JoJo Romero, the teams announced Saturday.

Sosa, 26, will give more defensive versatility to the Phillies, who rank 23rd in MLB by FanGraphs' defensive metrics. He's hitting .189/.244/.270 with three stolen bases over 53 games played this season.

At shortstop, the Cardinals have Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong, who was sent to the minors after struggling to start the season. Following the trade, St. Louis called up DeJong. He'll bat seventh Saturday against the Washington Nationals.

Romero, 25, has appeared in two games with the Phillies so far this season, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one. Over 21 2/3 innings, he possesses a 7.89 ERA and 6.41 FIP.
