Phillies sign manager Thomson to 2-year contract through 2024
The Philadelphia Phillies removed the interim tag from manager Rob Thomson and signed him to a two-year contract through the 2024 season, the club announced Monday.
Thomson took over after the Phillies fired Joe Girardi on June 3 following a 22-29 start to the season. Philadelphia proceeded to win 14 of 16 games after Thomson took over.
Thomson finished his first season at the helm with a 65-46 record and helped lead the Phillies to an upset victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League wild-card series.
"I could not be prouder of the group of players, coaches, and staff that have made this all possible," Thomson said in a statement, per The Associated Press. "This is a great group, one that has shown resiliency and overcome adversity all season to get us where we are today. I am honored and humbled to continue as manager of this club."
Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber took to Twitter to express his excitement that Thomson will continue to lead the club moving forward.
The 59-year-old previously served as Philadelphia's bench coach under Gabe Kapler and Girardi.
The Phillies will take on the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series, with Game 1 set for Tuesday at Truist Park in Atlanta.
