Report: Mariners inquired about Brewers' Wong
The Seattle Mariners have been in touch with the Milwaukee Brewers about the availability of second baseman Kolten Wong, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
Wong, 32, is a two-time Gold Glove winner and is coming off one of his best seasons at the plate, hitting .251/.339/.430 with 15 homers and 17 steals.
He's about to enter the final season of a three-year, $26-million contract and is owed $10 million.
The Mariners ranked 28th in MLB in production from second base, according to FanGraphs' WAR. Adam Frazier - who's now a free agent - and Abraham Toro got the majority of playing time at the keystone, combining to post a 74 wRC+.
Dylan Moore is the logical internal candidate to take over at second, though would make a better outfielder defensively. In a breakout 2022 campaign, the 30-year-old hit .224/.368/.385 with six homers and 21 steals in 104 games.
The Mariners already made a splash this winter, acquiring slugging outfielder Teoscar Hernandez from the Toronto Blue Jays for reliever Erik Swanson and pitching prospect Adam Macko. Hernandez, who could also act as the designated hitter, joins an outfield cast that includes Moore, Julio Rodriguez, Jesse Winker, Sam Haggerty, Jarred Kelenic, and Taylor Trammell.
