Report: Mets held meeting with 3-time Cy Young winner Verlander

The New York Mets are looking to fill one of the several holes in their starting rotation with a future Hall of Famer.

The Mets held a Zoom meeting with three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander last week, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Signing Verlander would reunite him with former Detroit Tigers teammate Max Scherzer. The pair played together in the Motor City from 2010-2014.

A Verlander addition could also help New York replace Jacob deGrom should the right-hander depart in free agency. DeGrom is expected to field offers from multiple clubs after opting out of his Mets deal. Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker are also free agents.

Verlander returned from Tommy John surgery to win the third Cy Young of his career thanks to an 18-4 record, 1.75 ERA, and 0.83 WHIP over 175 innings for the Houston Astros. He also captured his second World Series.

The Mets also met with Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga last week and have been in contact with right-hander Jameson Taillon, sources told Rosenthal.
