Pirates don't plan to move Reynolds despite 'disappointing' trade request
Outfielder Bryan Reynolds requested a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team spokesperson confirmed to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey.
It's unclear why Reynolds asked to be moved, according to Mackey.
The Pirates, however, don't intend to deal him away. The spokesperson labeled the news "disappointing" but said it has "zero impact" on their decision-making moving forward.
"Our goal is to improve the Pirates for 2023 and beyond," the statement continues. "With three years until he hits free agency, Bryan remains a key member of our team. We look forward to him having a great season for the Pirates."
Reynolds is under team control through 2025. He will be due for arbitration again in 2024.
Pittsburgh reportedly rejected enticing offers for the outfielder ahead of this past season's trade deadline. The New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners reportedly scouted Reynolds at varying points over the last year.
The switch-hitter has been a bright spot for the rebuilding Pirates since joining in the multi-player swap that sent former franchise star Andrew McCutchen to the San Francisco Giants in 2018. Reynolds had a career year in 2021, making the All-Star Game and slashing .302/.390/.522 with 24 home runs while leading the majors with eight triples.
He opened his MLB career in 2019 with an 11-game hitting streak and went on to bat .314/.377/.503 in 546 plate appearances during his rookie year.
