Report: Marlins willing to trade significant player for Casas
The Miami Marlins are looking for more offensive help this winter and are willing to trade a significant player on the roster to the Boston Red Sox for first baseman Triston Casas, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
While there seems to be mutual interest - the Marlins are pursuing more offense and possessing pitching depth, and the Red Sox seemingly need cost-controlled arms - a deal has not yet materialized, Jackson adds.
Casas, 22, is considered a top prospect in Boston's system and made his major-league debut last year. The lefty slugger, who went 15-for-76 with five homers and one stolen base over 27 games, will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2028 campaign.
The Marlins recently added free-agent infielder Jean Segura on a two-year, $17-million contract. However, they were also reportedly interested in signing Jose Abreu and Justin Turner - who ultimately signed elsewhere - which explains their continued pursuit of offense. Turner, coincidentally, signed with the Red Sox.
Jackson notes that Miami could include right-handed starter Pablo Lopez, southpaw Trevor Rogers, or rookie righty Edward Cabrera in such a deal.
2022 stats:
Pitcher | IP | ERA | FIP |
---|---|---|---|
Lopez | 180 | 3.75 | 3.71 |
Rogers | 107 | 5.47 | 4.36 |
Cabrera | 71 2/3 | 3.01 | 4.59 |
The Red Sox reportedly had interest in Joey Wendle, and the Marlins apparently discussed a deal with the Colorado Rockies involving Cabrera earlier this winter.
If the Marlins do move a starting pitcher, they could show additional interest in free-agent righty and veteran Johnny Cueto, Jackson also notes.
Boston has endured a dismal offseason so far, headlined by losing Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres via free agency. Aside from Turner, the franchise has added Masataka Yoshida, Corey Kluber, and Kenley Jansen, among others.
