The Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a trade that will send minor-league outfielder Chavez Young to Pittsburgh in exchange for right-hander Zach Thompson.

Thompson, 29, was recently designated for assignment by the Pirates. The former fifth-round pick made 22 starts and seven relief appearances for Pittsburgh last year, posting a 5.18 ERA and 4.87 FIP over 121 2/3 innings. He made his MLB debut for the Miami Marlins in 2021, authoring a 3.24 ERA and 3.69 FIP over 75 frames while working as a swingman.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Jays designated reliever Junior Fernandez - recently claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees - for assignment.

Young, 25, earned a promotion to Triple-A last year and hit .234/.331/.351 with five homers and 20 stolen bases. He also went 13-for-45 with a pair of doubles, two triples, and seven walks over 13 games in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
