White Sox GM: Hendriks progressing in cancer treatment, not on 60-day IL

Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks' health has made significant progress during his treatment for cancer, general manager Rick Hahn told reporters Wednesday.

Hendriks, who announced that he'd been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in January, will not open the season on the 60-day injured list, Hahn said. While a timeline for his return was not provided, the roster move means he'll continue to occupy a 40-man roster spot for the time being, potentially opening the door for him to pitch later in 2023.

"In recent days we've received positive news on Liam's progress. He remains in treatment, and still has some work ahead of him," Hahn said, according to Josh Frydman of WGN News. "However, he is making very good progress, and while we don't currently have a specific timeline available to share with you on his potential return, those of you who pay close attention to our roster will notice that we have not placed him on the 60-day IL, and that is on purpose."

Hahn added that he hopes to have a more clear timeline later in April.

Hendriks has not spoken publicly since his diagnosis outside of an Instagram post last month to thank fans for the support he's received.

"I know Liam and (his wife) Kristi are very appreciative of the well-wishes and respecting his privacy as he continues to fight his way back to the big leagues," Hahn said.

The 34-year-old Australian is entering the final season of a three-year contract with the White Sox. Hendriks was named an All-Star in each of his first two years with the club and saved an AL-high 38 games in 2021.
