Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Darick Hall requires surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and will be out for the foreseeable future.

Hall, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday, said the injury is not season-ending, according to Dave Uram of KYW Newsradio. However, there's no firm timetable for his return.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury while being thrown out in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees. Hall's hand hit the bag awkwardly as he tried to avoid shortstop Anthony Volpe's tag while sliding into second.

Losing Hall is the latest blow for the Phillies, who have been decimated by injuries during their slow start to the 2023 campaign. Hall was replacing Rhys Hoskins at first after the star slugger's season-ending knee injury late in spring training. Philadelphia is also still without superstar Bryce Harper and starting pitcher Ranger Suarez, among others.

Infielder Kody Clemens - who was recalled from Triple-A Friday - will get most of the playing time at first against right-handed pitching, manager Rob Thomson said, according to Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Clemens, the son of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, is playing first and hitting eighth in Friday's home opener. Alec Bohm could move across the diamond against lefties but will continue to primarily man third base.

"It's tough, but I mean, other guys have to step up," Thomson said, per WIP's Howard Eskin. That's what we've done in the past. ... Maybe we catch lightning in a bottle with Kody and he has a good year."

The Phillies enter Friday sporting a 1-5 record.
