Cubs, Happ agree to 3-year extension reportedly worth $61M
The Chicago Cubs signed outfielder Ian Happ to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal begins in 2024 and runs through the 2026 season. It's worth $61 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Happ receives a full no-trade clause as part of the deal, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.
"It's the place I've always wanted to be. I've been pretty clear about that for a long time," Happ said following the Cubs' 5-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners, per Marquee Sports Network. "I think just the fact that I have wanted to wear this uniform for as long as I possibly can made it pretty easy."
The 28-year-old is off to a hot start this season, slashing .314/.467/.514 with one home run, four doubles, six RBIs, and 10 walks in 45 plate appearances.
Happ was set to become a free agent at the end of this season.
The Cubs also signed infielder Nico Hoerner to a three-year extension in March and have Dansby Swanson, Seiya Suzuki, and Jameson Taillon signed to long-term deals.
