New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German agreed to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse, the team announced Wednesday.

General manager Brian Cashman said German would miss the remainder of the 2023 season and called it a very serious situation, according to Andy Martino of SNY.

"I'm worried right now for the person and the immediate family," Cashman said, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, adding German has previously dealt with alcoholism and that a specific incident took place Tuesday.

The Yankees subsequently placed the right-hander on the restricted list. The move removes German from the active roster for the duration he's away from the club.

The 30-year-old has posted a 4.56 ERA and 4.67 FIP over 108 2/3 innings this year. Since throwing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics on June 28, German struggled to a 4.61 ERA over five starts. New York recently scratched him from his scheduled outing against the Tampa Bay Rays due to right armpit discomfort.

Following the 2019 campaign, MLB handed German an 81-game suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy in an incident involving his girlfriend at a charity gala.

The Yankees added deadline acquisition and righty reliever Keynan Middleton to the 26-man roster in a corresponding move.
