The St. Louis Cardinals traded left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for prospect catcher Sammy Hernandez, the teams announced Friday.

The Cardinals recently designated Cabrera for assignment after the 26-year-old posted a 5.06 ERA and 5.04 FIP over 32 innings this year. The southpaw possesses a 4.14 ERA and 4.44 FIP over his five-year career since debuting with St. Louis in 2019.

If Cabrera joins the major-league roster, he'll be one of two lefties in the Jays' bullpen with Tim Mayza.

To clear room on the 40-man roster, Toronto designated right-handed reliever Trent Thornton for assignment.

Hernandez was hitting .213/.287/.367 with three homers and one steal in 42 games over two minor-league levels this year. The 19-year-old was the Jays' 14th-round pick out of Puerto Rico in the 2022 MLB Draft.
