Report: Mets, Alonso discussing extension but apart on term

The New York Mets and Pete Alonso have discussed a new contract for the star first baseman but aren't in agreement on the deal's length, a source told Sports Illustrated's Pat Ragazzo.

Alonso is looking for a 10-year contract, while the Mets have been unwilling to go that high, the source told Ragazzo. The two sides are reportedly on the same page when it comes to the contract's financial details, however.

"While we understand the media and public interest in player contract situations, we strongly believe in keeping those conversations private," Mets general manager Billy Eppler said in a statement, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "Any circulating reports do not accurately reflect our conversations with Pete."

The 28-year-old slugger is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2024 season. The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs reportedly showed interest in acquiring him at this season's trade deadline.

Alonso is enjoying another prolific season at the plate for the Mets. The two-time Home Run Derby champion owns an .846 OPS with 45 home runs and 112 RBIs across 143 games in 2023.
