Padres' Machado undergoes elbow tendon repair surgery
The San Diego Padres announced Tuesday that star third baseman Manny Machado underwent extensor tendon repair surgery on his right elbow.
Machado is expected to recover in 4-6 months, according to The Associated Press' Bernie Wilson, putting his availability for Opening Day next season in some jeopardy.
The 31-year-old battled tennis elbow on his right side for the past two campaigns. The issue forced Machado to act as the Padres' designated hitter for a number of games down the stretch of the 2023 regular season.
"We were trying to avoid it as much as we can," Machado said of the surgery in September, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell. "But unfortunately (the injury) has just put us in that situation, and you know what, it's probably going to make me better, going to make us all better. Just get it done, get ready for next year, come back and be healthy."
Machado finished the season with a .781 OPS, 30 home runs, and 91 RBIs across 138 games - his fewest appearances in a full season since 2014.
The Padres signed Machado to an 11-year, $350-million contract extension with a full no-trade clause in February.
