D-Backs' Marte walks off Phillies to take Game 3 of NLCS

Ketel Marte hit a ninth-inning walk-off single to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 2-1 victory in Thursday's Game 3 and claim their first win in the National League Championship Series.

Arizona and Philadelphia remained scoreless until the seventh inning thanks to impressive outings from Brandon Pfaadt and Ranger Suárez, who each pitched five-plus innings of shutout ball.

Pfaadt became the first pitcher in MLB postseason history with back-to-back starts allowing zero runs and zero walks. He's also the youngest starting pitcher in D-Backs history to record nine-plus strikeouts in a playoff start.

"It was fun - I had a lot of things working," Pfaadt said, according to The Associated Press. "I was able to hone in on a few things, execute the way I wanted, and get some big outs."

Bryce Harper scored the game's first run in the seventh frame on a wild pitch from D-Backs reliever Ryan Thompson. But Arizona responded in the bottom half of the inning when Alek Thomas scored on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. double.

Marte delivered the winning knock in the ninth against closer Craig Kimbrel just two batters after the Phillies threw out Gurriel at home.

It's just the second loss of the postseason for the Phillies, who appeared to move on quickly from the defeat.

The walk-off win is the third in D-Backs postseason history, with the last one occurring in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series when Luis Gonzalez delivered a game-winning hit off New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.

Philadelphia leads the series 2-1.

The Phillies will send Cristopher Sánchez to the mound in Friday's Game 4 at Chase Field in Arizona. The Diamondbacks will start Joe Mantiply as an opener.
