Report: Red Sox interview Gabe Kapler for head of baseball operations job
A surprising candidate has emerged in the search for the next Boston Red Sox head of baseball operations.
The Red Sox recently interviewed former San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler about leading the baseball operations department, sources told Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
San Francisco fired Kapler on Sept. 29 after nearly four seasons at the helm. The 48-year-old also spent two seasons as the manager of the Phillies from 2018-19.
Kapler has front-office experience, having spent four seasons as the farm director for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014-17.
The former outfielder spent four seasons as a player with the Red Sox, helping the franchise win the World Series in 2004.
Kapler is the latest external candidate the Red Sox interviewed, joining Chicago Cubs assistant general manager Craig Breslow, Minnesota Twins GM Thad Levine, and Cleveland Guardians special assistant Neal Huntington, according to Speier.
Former Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng elected not to interview for the position, sources told MassLive's Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam.
Boston has also interviewed at least three internal candidates, including assistant general managers Eddie Romero and Michael Groopman, as well as vice president of player development and scouting Paul Toboni, Speier reports.
The Red Sox fired former chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom on Sept. 14 after nearly four seasons with the franchise.
