Report: Tigers, E-Rod discussing restructured deal ahead of opt-out decision
Eduardo Rodriguez's days in Detroit may not be done just yet.
The Tigers are reportedly in discussions with Rodriguez's camp about potentially keeping him on a restructured contract, a source told Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
Rodriguez must decide whether or not to opt out of the final three years and $49 million of his deal by Saturday. It was reported last month that he planned to opt out and test free agency for the second time in his career.
The 30-year-old left-hander signed with Detroit two years ago after six seasons with the Boston Red Sox. While his first year in Motown was rocky, Rodriguez rebounded with a career-best 2023 campaign by posting a 3.30 ERA and 1.15 WHIP along with 143 strikeouts over 26 starts.
Detroit had a deal in place to send Rodriguez to the Los Angeles Dodgers at this year's trade deadline before he blocked the move.
The Tigers posted a losing record once again in 2023 but there were still plenty of positive signs for the rebuilding team. Manager A.J. Hinch's squad improved by 12 wins and finished in second place for the first time since 2016.
