Yankees claim Oscar Gonzalez off waivers from Guardians
The New York Yankees added a talented outfielder to their organizational depth charts on Friday, claiming Oscar Gonzalez off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians.
Gonzalez struggled through his sophomore MLB campaign last season. The Dominican slashed .214/.239/.312 with two home runs, 12 RBIs, and 46 strikeouts in 180 plate appearances.
The 25-year-old performed well for the Guardians during his rookie season, though, posting a .789 OPS with 11 homers, 27 doubles, and 43 RBIs in 91 games.
He also hit a memorable extra-innings walk-off homer against the Tampa Bay Rays during the 2022 AL wild-card series to help advance the Guardians to the division series against the Yankees.
Gonzalez delivered a bases-loaded walk-off hit in that same division series, helping Cleveland win Game 3 before they lost in five contests to New York.
