Mets demote Baty, Scott to minors amid roster shuffle
The New York Mets sent third baseman Brett Baty and right-hander Christian Scott to Triple-A amid a busy morning of roster shuffling, the team announced.
Baty, a once-heralded top-25 prospect, has struggled to a .225/.304/.325 slash line. The emergence of Mark Vientos (174 OPS+, .591 SLG) appeared to force the Mets' hand, leading to Baty's demotion.
Scott, meanwhile, has performed well for New York. The 24-year-old owns a 3.90 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings across five starts.
He's expected to return to the big leagues soon, with his minor-league stint aligning with upcoming off-days for the Mets, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Sending Scott down also keeps his innings in check, with him never having thrown more than 87 2/3 frames in a season before.
Veteran shortstop Jose Iglesias and right-hander Dedniel Núñez were recalled from Triple-A to take the open roster spots
The Mets also made a trade on Friday, acquiring catcher Luis Torrens from the New York Yankees. To clear a roster spot for Torrens, the Mets designated Omar Narváez for assignment.
It's been a hectic week for the struggling Mets, who called a players-only meeting after reliever Jorge López tossed his glove into the stands on Wednesday, which followed an injury scare for star first baseman Pete Alonso after he was struck in the hand by a pitch.
