Reds acquire Slater from Giants for Young

The Cincinnati Reds acquired veteran outfielder Austin Slater from the San Francisco Giants for left-hander Alex Young, the clubs announced Monday.

Slater has spent his entire eight-year career with the Giants and owns a .735 OPS with 39 home runs and 162 RBIs across 593 games. The 31-year-old has struggled in 2024, slashing .200/.330/.244 with one home run, 12 runs scored, and nine RBIs in 43 games.

Slater was particularly productive in 2021 and 2022, hitting 19 home runs with 66 RBIs, 27 stolen bases, and a 115 wRC+ while accumulating 3.7 fWAR in 254 games.

Young hasn't allowed a run in three appearances for the Reds this season. The 30-year-old is 16-18 with a 4.40 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and 226 strikeouts over 163 career appearances.
