Reds' Greene, Orioles' Westburg named All-Stars as injury replacements
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene and Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg were named All-Stars on Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced.
Greene takes the NL roster spot of Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a back issue earlier Tuesday. Westburg is replacing Rafael Devers on the AL squad after the Boston Red Sox third baseman withdrew from the event because of shoulder soreness.
Both players will be making their All-Star debuts.
Greene, now in his third major-league season, earned the honor in the midst of a breakout first half atop Cincinnati's rotation. The 24-year-old owns a 3.45 ERA, 3.68 FIP, and 1.14 WHIP along with 116 strikeouts and a 10.0 K/9 rate across 18 starts. He's allowed just nine homers in 104 1/3 innings.
"Hopefully, I'll have more opportunities like today, and I'm able to enjoy moments like this. It's exciting to be able to do it early," Greene said, according to Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It's even more motivation to go into the offseason to work even harder and do it again in the future."
Greene gives the Reds two All-Stars at this year's festivities, alongside starting NL shortstop Elly De La Cruz. Manager David Bell will also be there as part of Torey Lovullo's coaching staff.
Westburg, 25, has also taken a massive step forward in 2024 and emerged as a pillar of the first-place Orioles. Through his first 83 games, he's hitting .281/.328/.506 with 14 homers, 49 RBIs, and six stolen bases while tallying five outs above average and two defensive runs saved at third base.
Westburg is the fourth Oriole selected to next week's Midsummer Classic, joining catcher Adley Rutschman, shortstop Gunnar Henderson, and pitcher Corbin Burnes.
The 2024 MLB All-Star Game takes place July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
